Chokers & Flies Review - Troubled Times

Troubled Times, Spring- Summer 1986, B. Idaho
Review of Chokers & Flies Old Time Music

On side one, the Chokers play up a storm and make me happy and sad in the space of twenty minutes. ... They represent what's good about old-time music; not sounding like bluegrass, but not sounding like "biblethumpers" either. ... I'd like to get my hands (and ears and feet) on a full-length record from this group.

Chokers at the Newport Folk Festival - with Alison Krauss, Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band, Hot Rize

Program Billing:

The Chicken Chokers are a modern reincarnation of a Southern old-time dance band from the early part of this century. Their music can be hot and rocking or funky and rolling with a twist of weirdness thrown in for good measure. The sound is a blend of old-time melodies on the fiddle, harmonica, banjo combined with a guitar, banjo, uke, bass rhythm section! The straight-ahead Choker vocal stylings clearly separate their old-time sound from the manicured sound of bluegrass music.

Standard Times, North Kingstown, RI 8/14/86, F.Johnette Frick
Newport Folk Festival offers rousing variety

The festival's lead-off group, The Chicken Chokers, earned their name from their particularly offbeat reincarnation of an old-fashioned Southern dance band, with a nod to another of their influences in a fine rendition of Michael Hurley's "Water [Train]".

For centuries the artist has painted flesh, religion, dreams, the world around him. Like the artist, I've painted a landscape, only a musical one. My landscape involves a large number of contrasting musical ideas in order to express the intense, surrealistic nature of the real world around me.
